News from the Neighborhood
By Justin Adams
The third annual 12South Neighborhood Tour was a success by any measure. More than 300 people took the tour and net proceeds were up more than 20 percent from last year. The tour’s success ensures the continuation of programs like the newsletter, neighborhood cleanups and Montrose in May, and allows the association to invest in new programs. Also, approximately $500 was raised for children’s athletic programs at Sevier Park Community Center.
John Schweikert on Halcyon chaired this year’s tour. Lee Ann Lambdin, Todd McEachern and Tricia Frantz, all on Montrose, coordinated with tour site owners, docents and other volunteers, and sponsors and advertisers. Caroline Duley on Knox coordinated entertainment and Wendy Stamberger on Halcyon coordinated publications. The association is indebted to each of them for their cheerful service and dedication to the 12South Neighborhood. The association is likewise indebted to the nearly 60 neighbors who volunteered their homes, supplies and time.
Thank you!

An Interview with the Folks that Keep Our Neighborhood Clean
By Ken Winter
The two hardest working guys we have in our neighborhood are not even residents. They are Robert Brady and Cedric Jordan, trash collectors with Metro. Here are some of their comments from recent conversations:
€ Thanks to all neighbors who bag their garbage and put it in the brown bins. Robert and Cedric’s work is so much safer and cleaner since Metro provided the large, covered “cans” with hinged tops. Bagged, household garbage, even in grocery store plastic bags, makes pickup more efficient.
€ Please do not put household garbage in the other (green) bins. Robert and Cedric never even open them. Another team collects those recyclables (paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, and food cans) the first Thursday of the month. Every piece of paper and cardboard and every plastic bottle or aluminum can that goes into the green can does not take up valuable space in the landfills.
€ Construction material cannot go in either can. In the worst case, Robert says, contractors wearing masks are dumping asbestos, lead-filled paint and other hazardous waste in the bins for Robert and Cedric to handle without protection. Call Metro at 880-1000 to find out how to dispose of this waste safely and legally.
Thanks again from Robert and Cedric. Take a moment to offer your thanks to them next time you see them!

Where ‘Grups’ Shop
By Kim Green
An April article in New York Magazine titled “Up With Grups” purports to define an emerging phenomenon: a new kind of “grown-up”—the urban hipster who rejects the frumpier trappings of adulthood. Often sighted sipping Prosecco at 12South’s own Wine Bar and Mirror Restaurant, these 40somethings dressed like 20somethings refuse to outgrow their own funky, eclectic, young tastes. Look for the unique markings of this breed—oddly-shaped glasses, $200 distressed jeans, the original U2 Joshua Tree European Tour t-shirt from 1987.
Thanks to “Bloke,” Melody Malloy’s sleek new men’s boutique at 2900 12th Ave. South, Nashville’s male Grups have a new hunting ground for hipsterwear. “The whole concept of the store is that it’s a guy’s guy kind of place,” says Malloy, who grew up moving back and forth between L.A. and Nashville with her record-industry dad. The store evokes her L.A.-mixed-with-Southern girl vibe, and every detail speaks to a male sensibility: vintage-style nudie pinup-girl art, pool table and dartboard, old-school rock-and-roll on the sound system.
“Men’s fashion is getting more diverse,” says Melody, who offers several “fashion-forward” lines not found elsewhere in Nashville—think Paul Smith’s signature stripes and James Perse’s brushed-cotton tee shirts. “Men are starting to ‘dress up’ more, in more interesting colors, textures, fabrics and cuts.”
Malloy loves her new retail digs in the 12South neighborhood. “I love the whole vibe here,” she says. “The character of the buildings—it seems very metropolitan to me. I think this neighborhood is the next hot place.”
If you can’t quite foot the bill for the tailored distressed denim, boutique-style Converse sneakers, or graphic tees at Bloke, it’s worth at least stopping in every couple of weeks to see what’s new. Think of it as our own local Cool Guy Museum. And by the way, the store’s not really open 24 hours – the red neon sign is Melody’s little joke on the unhip and ironically challenged among us.
