Kids! Celebrate Your Independent Spirits at Neighborhood Parade
Kids (and moms, dads, step-parents, grandparents, friends, etc.) come out and celebrate our nation’s birthday at the neighborhood’s Independent Kid Parade. The fun starts at 10 a.m.

Kids: Plan to line up at 9:45 a.m. at 12th Ave. South and Kirkwood. Bring your bikes, skates, skateboards, Razor scooters and other motorless vehicles decked out in holiday colors (or whatever colors you choose). Sorry Fido, pets should stay home.

Kids and grownups alike are invited to bring their own picnic and throw down a blanket on the grass at Sevier Park to watch the fun.

A Beautification Questionaire: What do You Think?
By Ken Winter
What do you think about our close-knit and walkable neighborhood, with its 100-year-old streets and alleys? Our historic storefronts, Folk Victorian, bungalow and other traditional homes? The Waverly Belmont School and Sevier Park? Our diverse population of churches, working people, children and retirees?
What problems concern you?
Deteriorating housing? Crime? Traffic, trash and noise? Inadequate play areas, gardens and birds? The education of our children and the welfare of our elderly? The loss of historic homes?
Can you help? Do you need help?
The enclosed survey solicits your opinion on these subjects and more. Its title is Beautification, but it is designed to get your opinion on much more. Its aim is to identify what we can do, individually and collectively, to make life in the neighborhood better.
Please complete the survey and put it in the shoebox on the front porch of a neighbor near you. We will publish the results soon and then try to work on those tasks you think are important.

Adopting East Sevier Park
By Ken Winter
South and Sunnyside neighbors have taken an important step in making the Kirkwood and 10th Avenue sides of Sevier Park safer and cleaner.
It started with complaints by neighbors Bernadette Welch and Jeff Langdon. They observed that motorists approaching the four-way stop at 10th and Kirkwood were speeding and littering, that trees and bushes at the corner were obscuring vision, that children were “running” the stop signs, and that entrances to the park were ill-defined.
This information complemented the experiences of veteran park watchers Bobby Johnson, president of Sunnyside, and 12South’s Ken Winter. Bobby had long been lobbying for a safe park entrance at the corner of 10th and Clayton. For years, Ken and others have been picking up litter at the park’s community center and nearby play areas.
All of this effort resulted in a memorandum two weeks ago to Metro Parks, Public Works and Police. Our proposals, coordinated with Councilman Ronnie Greer and Metro Beautification’s Veronica Frazier, included the following:
€ Increased traffic monitoring and signage on 10th and Kirkwood avenues
€ Removal of heavy foliage crowding 10th and obscuring vehicles and pedestrians at the intersection;
€ Installation of crosswalks and sidewalks facilitating safe entry to the park
€ Completing a walking trail around the Kirkwood and 10th sides of the park
€ Installation of trashcans and signage at the community center and the basketball, tennis and soccer areas.

As of June 22, police began ticketing speeders, Public Works cleared three feet of the 10th Avenue shoulder, and Metro’s traffic engineer initiated a study of the problem intersection.
We appreciate the prompt initial attention by the Metro agencies and we anticipate working with them further as they consider these issues. And we invite all interested neighbors to be unofficial “Friends of Sevier Park.”

Another Modest Proposal…
By Ken Winter
It is well documented that staggering numbers of our nation’s citizens are in
tragically ill health and that poor diet and lack of exercise are greatly responsible.
Kill both birds with one stone: shop on foot at the fresh produce market on 12th Avenue South. All we need is such a market and a willingness to place healthier food on the dinner table. No, we don’t have one yet, but you know we need one, badly.
Barry at the Produce Place on Murphy Road and other entrepreneurs: take note. This neighborhood would welcome you with open arms.
