Last Chance on BEAUTIFICATION
Survey
By Ken Winter
In the July issue we sent a questionnaire on beautification to over 600 homes, businesses and churches. The instructions were to compete the form and take it to a shoebox near you. The shoeboxes will remain in place until August 10. If you wish to comment on how to improve our neighborhood, please return that survey to us. If you need a form, contact Ken Winter at 385-9762 or kcwinter@earthlink.net.

Hospice Volunteer Orientation August 19
By Dan Smith
Odyssey HealthCare is offering volunteer opportunities for residents of 12South. Hospice volunteers visit patients, sit with patients while caregivers get a break, run simple errands for hospice patients, offer support during bereavement and undertake other caring acts. You can be a volunteer in your own neighborhood. We offer training and support at no charge. You must be at least 18 years old and go through orientation, which will help you become an effective volunteer. Volunteer assignments are geared to your schedule and what you wish to offer. Somebody in 12 South will benefit from your efforts. Our next orientation is 19 August. For more information, please call 837-9556 or e-mail hsmith@odsyhealth.com.

Farewell, Frantz Family
By Justin Adams
Tricia and Dan Frantz moved to 1010 Montrose Ave. in 1994. Much of what makes the 12South neighborhood what it is today - the two streetscaping projects, widespread renovations and infill, even the name “12South” – was still in the future. Tricia quickly saw a need for an active neighborhood organization on Montrose Avenue, found like-minded neighbors, and formed the Montrose Neighborhood Alliance, which quickly grew to involve residents from Carruthers to Paris. Monthly meetings, this neighborhood newsletter, neighborhood cleanups and neighborhood block parties quickly followed, and Tricia and Dan were always in the thick of it. Tricia’s constant effort and dedication defined the organization and made it survive lean years so that it could become what it is today.
So it is with regret that we announce that Tricia, Dan and their son Thor are leaving the neighborhood and moving to the Crieve Hall area in August. Those of us who have enjoyed Tricia and Dan's friendship and support will miss them. Because of Tricia’s efforts, our neighborhood organization is healthy and strong and will keep on ticking despite the departure of a founding member. But we’ll still feel the loss.
Todd McEachern, who worked closely with Tricia during the organization’s early days, is organizing a farewell party for the family Saturday, August 12 (see right). Please join us as we express our gratitude to Tricia, Dan, and Thor for their friendship and wish them good fortune and happiness in their new home.
