Calling All Artists
By Kim Green
The fifth annual HalcyArt, a neighborhood art show and sale on Halcyon Ave. a few weeks before Christmas, seeks artists in the neighborhood who would like to participate this year. We’re looking for all kinds of artists—from nervous newbies to grizzled veterans. Traditional arts and crafts like
paintings, pottery, jewelry, photography, and knitted items are always welcome, but surprise us! We’d love to broaden our horizons with your wild-and-crazy creative works.
Because we had around 400 guests last year and a packed house, this year John Peets and Wendy Stamberger have generously agreed to open their gorgeous home in 2006 for our first ever two-house HalcyArt.
HalcyArt is a completely nonprofit endeavor, except for whatever you starving artists take home at the end of the day. Small donations from participants, neighbors, Mom and Dad, and the magnificent assistance and sponsorship of Christy Shuff of Rumours Gallery and Wine and Art Bar make this event possible and keep the wine and hors d’oeuvres rolling.

Save the date: Saturday, Dec. 2, from 4-8 p.m., and let Kim Green know if you’re interested in participating. 482-2218 or aviatrixkim@comcast.net.

12South Mainstay Cornering the Nashville Music Market
by Melanie Moran

“Just out of curiosity, does that thing have a feedback killer on it?”
“Were you asking about pedal boards? Who’s asking about the pedal boards?”
“Brian Eno still uses one. What, it’s good enough for Brian Eno, but not good enough for you?”

I overheard these questions, which sounded like an exotic and enticing foreign language to my non-musician ears, on a recent visit to 12South’s Corner Music. I was standing near the tropical fish tank, close to the amplifers, a few steps from guitars and by a display case filled with things like wah wah pedals and fuzzboxes. Chances are if you’re a musician in Nashville, you’ve stood here too, ogling the latest instruments, picking up a pack of strings or hauling your old bass in for repairs.
“Our primary clientele are touring professionals and session guys,” Todd Austin, the store’s mohawk-sporting electric guitar manager, said. He reeled off a who’s who of famous guitar players and musicians who have made the trip to the shop—Keith Urban, Billy Gibbons, Joe Walsh, Joe Perry, Motley Crue and Garth Brooks.
“Musicians come to us because we’ve been here so long and because we’re a professional-level store,” Austin said.
Austin is a musician himself, playing with local bands such as the Disciples of Loud and funk extravaganza Jones World. He isn’t alone; Corner Music is staffed pretty much exclusively by musicians, with guitar players working with guitars, keyboardists working with keyboards, etc.
“The main reason for our store is we all love music, and why not do something you love?” store owner Larry Garris said. Garris moved Corner Music to 12South in 1984 after eight years in Berry Hill. “I guess if we were all golfers we’d have a golf shop, but we’re musicians, so here we are.”
In addition to instrument sales and repair work, the store is also home to Corner Audio and Video, specializing in sound, lights and video installation in churches and other venues.
    Stop by the store at 2705 12th Ave. S. Mon.-Fri. from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or visit Corner Music online at www.cornermusic.com.

Beautification Report
By Ken Winter
Survey. The July newsletter included a questionnaire asking 12South residents and businesses for their input on key issues facing our neighborhood. We received 27 responses—too few, but thoughtful and promising. Below is a preliminary picture of the top concerns expressed.
Identifying illegal activity and reporting criminal behavior topped the list as most important, with each receiving 20 votes. Next came removing trash, illegal signs and graffiti, closely followed by promoting porches, yards, socializing, walking, biking, shopping locally and 12South improvements. Receiving between 12 and 14 votes for most important were conducting two annual neighborhood cleanups; identifying problems such as animals, sanitation, pests, building zoning, property standards, street and traffic waste, etc.; and identifying and encouraging rehabilitation of pre-1940s structures.
Other issues receiving multiple top votes were controlling animals; forming a neighborhood watch, publicizing police programs in the neighborhood; adding landscaping, including a garden at 12South and Ashwood traffic island; removing inoperative “stuff” such as fence rows and junk vehicles; identifying needed businesses and services; promoting housing options for a variety of income levels, installing litter control, speeding and children-at-play signs; documenting housing, educational, health and social needs; and establishing an annual garden tour.

I think the main themes here are:
(1) reduce crime;
(2) nurture neighborliness in the neighborhood; and
(3) clean up trash and junk.

But this analysis is tentative and incomplete. We’d still love to get your input - call or email me (385-9762 or kcwinter@earthlink.net) and I will get you a questionnaire.

The Paris Avenue Hillside Garden. Take a look at the Paris entrance garden behind Blokes and across from 12South Yoga. Halcyon neighbor Kathleen Kelly has splashed the rock garden with color. I’m sure it was a hard afternoon of labor and love.
12th Avenue South Trash Reduction. A small crew of neighbors – some known, some not—are ridding the utility poles of illegal signs, the gutters of litter, and the lots of unlicensed and abandoned vehicles.
Report An Aggressive Driver. Metro Police has a new Aggressive Driver Unit. You can “Report An Aggressive Driver” on the web (www.police.nashville.org).
