News from the Neighborhood
By David Thompson
Being an active part of a neighborhood association requires commitment, hard work and a knack for getting things done. For many years, our organization had been served by Justin Adams; Justin possesses all three qualities just mentioned. Justin and his family have made the decision to sell their home and move to East Nashville. We wish Justin the best of luck and thank him sincerely for all his hard work. Here are a few highlights from Justin’s tenure with the association:
1. The association incorporated as the 12South Neighborhood Association and assumed the role of the neighborhood duties previously performed by the Montrose Neighborhood Association.
2. We had our first home tour and Justin led the charge as the chair of the home tour committee.
3. The association worked through all the fun issues that arose with the completion of the 12South streetscape project, relations with merchants and identifying a few items that still need to be addressed like trees, trash cans and beautifying the traffic island.
4. Preparation and submission of an application to receive 501(c)(3) non-profit status from the Internal Revenue Service.
5. Formalization of our annual budget.
6. Launching our new website at www.12south.org and establishing the Yahoo blast e-mail program to alert neighbors to important events in our neighborhood.

The Future of Neighborhoods
By Ken Winter
The six-month study in which several 12Southers and Sunnysiders participated was unveiled in December: 250 participants, 40 pages, 14 “visions” with action plans. In essence, the aim is to get neighborhoods in a more proactive stance vis-a-vis Metro, the council and developers.
The 14 vision areas included: accountability; business & economic development; education; environment & public health; government & citizen participation; housing; human relations and diversity; neighborhood condition; neighborhood interactions and connections; public parks, spaces facilities and private cultural, arts and entertainment institutions; planning, zoning & development; public safety & criminal justice; transportation; youth & seniors. The plan now is to share this with neighbors and invite involvement of individuals and groups in specific vision areas of interest.
Speakers and programs available from Nashville Neighborhood Alliance and Neighborhood Resource Center.

City of Wine
By Kim Green
Vinea (vin ee’ uh), n. 1 City of wine. [< Latin] 2 12South’s new wine shop
Two days before Thanksgiving, 12South’s own wine store finally opened its doors, after more than a year of preparations. Housed on the corner of 12th and Caruthers (next door to Mafiaoza’s and adjacent to Corrieri’s ), Vinea is the brainchild of cheese shop owner Brett Corrieri and former pharmaceutical rep Kristen Maharrey. “I kept driving up and down the street here,” says Maharrey, “and I just kept thinking, ‘This place needs a little wine shop.’”
Maharrey describes Vinea as a “boutique wine shop” but adds quickly that by “boutique” she doesn’t mean high-end. “We don’t have room to have everything, so we try to get the best wines from each region for the best value. We have wines ranging from $5.99 to $1,000 a bottle, but we have lots in the $15-$30 range.
“We know most people don’t spend $50 on a bottle to have with dinner,” she adds. “We want to offer wines for every budget and every occasion. We have excellent wines here for only $10. We even have box wine,” she laughs, showing me a box of pinot noir called “Le Faux Frog,” which is produced by Robin Williams’ brother Todd “the Toadster” Williams.
Vinea’s hardwood floors, exposed ceiling ducts, and warm faux-finished and brick walls reflect 12South’s aesthetic – urban and sophisticated, mellowed a bit by age – kind of like a nice wine, come to think of it. Fridge units full of white wine line one wall, and wooden wine racks stacked with reds organized by region fill most of the rest of the shop’s 2,500 square feet.
The shop’s database should make wines easy to locate and, better yet, to recall. Vinea will enter each customer’s purchases into the system, so you’ll never again have to ask sheepishly, “What was that red wine that smelled of elderberries that I bought last fall? I think it had a cow on the label…”
Vinea will host free wine tastings at Corrieri’s on Saturdays from 2-5 p.m. and in February will begin wine classes on Wednesdays at Mafiaoza’s for those who want to learn a little more.
Vinea: Open Mon-Sat 9 a.m.-11 p.m. www.vineawine.com

Superbowl
Recipe
White Bean Chili with Chicken (a twist on traditional chili)
[from RecipeTips.com]
***
3 cans white beans, drained, rinsed
2 tsp. vegetable oil
2 large onions, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 celery stalks, chopped
15 oz. can whole tomatoes, undrained
1 T chili powder
1 and 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1 and 1/2 tsp. oregano
1 tsp. red pepper flakes
1 cup chicken stock
1 and 1/2 pounds chicken breast, cooked and shredded
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. grnd. black pepper
Heat oil in saucepan, add onion, garlic and chopped celery, and sauté for about 5 minutes or until vegetable are soft.
Add drained beans, chili powder, cumin, oregano, red pepper flakes, tomatoes, drained green chilis and enough chicken broth to cover beans.
Bring to a boil over high heat. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer until beans begin to soften, about 1 hour.
When beans have cooked, add the shredded, cooked chicken and simmer 20 minutes longer.
Set out garnishes (shredded cheese, sour cream, tortilla chips, etc.) in separate bowls. Ladle chili into bowls, and let guests add garnishes to taste. Serves 6.
