Beautification Notes
By Ken Winter
DeFord Bailey Rose Garden
Three weeks ago the DeFord Bailey Rose Garden was dedicated at the Earth Matters Food Park at 10th (Lealand) Ave. and Gale Lane. Several hundred visitors, including family and friends of the legendary harmonica player, promenaded among a dozen new varieties of miniature and tea roses named for country music performers.
The garden, advised by local rosarian Dr. Louis Mishu, is the third component of the 13-year old environmental education project. The first two – a composting operation and 30 individually-worked garden plots – provide outdoor earth stewardship activity and free products for the neighborhood. A dozen members of the 12South and Sunnyside neighborhood associations participate.
Hours are 9am - 12pm every Saturday and by appointment. This organization could use your support – they are currently trying to raise funds for an irrigation system. For more information call 252-6953, e-mail earthmatterstn@hotmail.com or visit www.CarverFoodPark.com.
Stray Cats. Several neighbors have poured their compassion, money and sweat into a project to humanely control homeless cats, capturing dozens of feral felines and transporting them to veterinarians for medical care and neutering. Please do your part to help by spaying or neutering cats you care for. Humane traps are available at The Cat Shoppe, 2824 Bransford Ave, 297-7877. For information from our local experts, e-mail Pippa at pippa@io.com.
And, don’t forget to put water out for our birds and other small animals during this terrible drought. They are suffering more than we are.
Neighborhood Watch. In the past 12 months, the community experienced a rash of burglaries (a group was arrested) as well as a few assaults on drivers, a street shooting, a home invasion/assault/robbery, and the usual spring thefts of yard items. In response we talked with the Sunnyside neighbors and Metro Police and then committed to form a neighborhood watch.
At its simplest a neighborhood watch is a few residents who exchange phone numbers and look out for each other. Once registered with Metro, the watch group gains more attention from and easier access to the police. This will not take much time or bureaucracy; it requires only neighborliness, attentiveness and a phone/e-mail tree.
The first step is to define our watch boundaries. Please call or e-mail me by August 15 if you want your street involved.
Proposal: A Neighborhood Chautauqua For the past four years, our annual neighborhood tour t-shirts have been emblazoned with the phrase “Restoring Community.” Maybe it’s time we began a democratic discussion about what that might mean.
Such deliberations are taking place all over town. Over the past 10 years, thousands of Nashvillians of all stripe have participated in various public forums about the future. The resulting publications and organizations – among others, The Plan of Nashville, The Future of Neighborhoods, The Cumberland River Compact, and the Civic Design Center – are having everyday impact on planning and change in the city.
So what does this have to do with us? First, a dozen of our neighbors, including the current 12S, Sunnyside, Woodland in Waverly and Hillsboro-Belmont presidents, learned from and contributed to some of these meetings. More important, the communities around 12th Avenue South and Five Points in East Nashville are seen as the leading examples of “all purpose” neighborhoods that sprouted in the early 20th Century and now are models for thinking about 21st Century neighborhoods. People are literally thirsting for walkable, friendly, front-porch communities where housing, services, schools, work, worship and recreation are closely situated for a community of friends.
Some of you have expressed interest in meeting occasionally to hear speakers, watch films and talk together what might unite us in a quest for better community. If you have ideas, please forward them for distribution to like-minded souls. We’ll try to get something started.

Free Eric Volz
In February 2006, Eric Volz, the son of neighbors Maggie and Dane Anthony, was convicted on murder charges in Nicaragua where he had been living, despite ample evidence that he was over two hours away from the scene of the crime when it was committed. He is appealing his sentence. Eric’s family and friends need your support to free Eric and bring him home. Visit their Web site, www.friendsofericvolz.com, for more information on how you can help.
