Fresh Produce Returns to 12South
Answering the oft-spoken desires of many neighbors, a fresh produce stand
has set up shop in the neighborhood. 12South Produce, just off of 12th Ave. on Halcyon, is offering delicious homegrown tomatoes, greens, apples, peaches and more, not to mention a wide selection of fall favorites including mums and pumpkins. Look for more information in next month’s newsletter. In the meantime, let’s support this new locally owned business which fills a significant retail gap in our neighborhood.

News from the Neighborhood
By David Thompson
Exercise the Franchise. Please remember to vote on Sept. 11 for the Metro run-off elections. Sandra Moore and Frank Stevenson are vying to represent District 17 in the Metro Council. The mayor’s race and the four at-large Metro Council seats are also up for grabs. All candidates and their supporters are encouraged to remove their yard signs and dispose of them properly after the election.
September Gathering/Festival/Cookout. Montrose in May was not held this year given the preference by 12South members to push the neighborhood festival to the fall—farther away from the Home Tour. The proposed date for the gathering/festival/cookout at Sevier Park is Saturday, Sept. 29. Please contact David Thompson to volunteer or provide ideas.
Fairgrounds Racetrack. On July 17, neighbors had an opportunity to voice their opinion directly to the State Fairgrounds Board concerning the Music City Motorplex’s request for a 20-year lease extension. Neighbors pointed out the excessive noise that comes from the racetrack both day and night. The State Fairgrounds Board has indicated that it will hire a consultant to advise as to the best possible use for the property. A proposal is expected by the end of the year. The current Motorplex lease expires Oct. 2, 2008.
Gale Park. Metro Council unanimously approved plans for the Gale Park
subdivision Aug. 21. The development, to be located at the corner of Gale and Vaulx lanes, will contain 33 attached townhomes, five flats over retail, 58 detached single family townhomes, and 4,200 square feet of retail and restaurant uses.
12South Development Plan. The Metro Planning Commission sponsored neighborhood meetings in order to prepare a Detailed Neighborhood Design Plan to address zoning in the 12South Corridor—business, residential and multi-use. Look for a report of the Planning Commission’s findings soon.
$2,100 Donated for Traffic Island. The association has received $2,100 in donations to landscape the traffic island housing our neighborhood sign on 12th Ave. S. 1221 Partners LLC donated $1,000 Aug. 20 in memory of Charles W. Hawkins, III, founder of the Chas. Hawkins Company and an early pioneer of Nashville’s urban preservation. The partners noted in their letter accompanying their donation, “We highly commend the 12SNA for its ongoing work. 12South has become a more desirable, livable, safer and sustainable neighborhood and community from your efforts. We thank you!” Additional donations came from The Village Fund, Alliance Construction, Virigina F. Degerberg and Alessandro Rustioni. The association warmly thanks these businesses and individuals for their generosity and their commitment to our community.

Improv Club Brings Laughs to 12South
By Melanie Moran
I went to that comedy club in your neighborhood last weekend,” a friend told me a few months ago. “What comedy club?” I asked. “The one above Las Paletas,” she said. I live about a three-minute walk from Las Paletas and had no idea there was a comedy club there, but my East Nashville-dwelling friend and scores of others in-the-know have been yukking it up since 2005 with Nashville’s own improv troupe, Improv Nashville. The troupe holds many of its 90-minute shows upstairs from Las Paletas at 2907 12th Ave. S. Upcoming showtimes are 8 p.m. Sept. 14, 21 and 28. Tickets are $10. To buy tickets, read troupe bios, get info. about booking Improv Nashville for a corporate party or to sign up for classes to put yourself center stage, visit www.improvnashville.com.

Native Plants Help Your Garden Beat the Heat
By Chris Moran
I’m writing this during the second week of August, with temperatures reaching close to or over 100 degrees every day this week. We’ve not had measurable rain since June. Most of the plants (except cactus!) in my yard look pretty sad, but some are tolerating the heat and drought better than others.
If you are planning to plant a new garden or add some new plants to an existing garden this fall, you may want to consider planting some drought-tolerant native plants in order to reduce the amount of time you’ll have to stand and water or move the sprinkler around next summer. Native plants (those that are indigenous to the area) often have advantages in the garden over plants from other parts of the world. They are adapted to the local climate and soils and tend to require less maintenance in terms of fertilizers, other soil amendments and watering. Unlike some “imported” species, natives generally are not invasive/nuisance plants. Natives provide food and habitat for native animal species, especially birds and insects (including butterflies).
Obviously, native plants have adapted to various habitats – from mountains, to glades, to wetlands – throughout our state and region. Below is a short list of some garden-worthy Tennessee-native plants. They’ll do well in our Middle Tennessee clay, and will resist heat and drought. Those marked with a * prefer shade, those with a + prefer sun. Photos and more information can be found at http://tenn.bio.utk.edu/vascular/vascular.html.
