News from the Neighborhood: Home Tour 2008 a Success
By Tarek El Gammal
On Saturday, April 19th, the 12South Neighborhood Association hosted its fifth annual 12South Neighborhood Tour. Faced with competing local events (Earth Day and Downtown Home Tour) and inclement weather, the tour was still able to draw a good crowd that generated ticket sales comparable to last year’s totals.
In addition to the wonderful homes and gardens showcased this year, the tour, with the strong support of the area merchants and business owners, continued its tradition of providing patrons with a high-quality experience that featured handsome tour materials and an overall well-run event. I would like to personally thank all of the homeowners, sponsors and advertisers, volunteers and committee members that contributed their valuable time to ensure the event’s ongoing success.
As for the homes and gardens themselves, this year was unique in that it included not only a wide variety of home styles and tenure—traditional bungalows to post-modern design, vintage to new construction—the tour also included a wide variety of homeowners. Some of the homeowners are relative newcomers to the neighborhood while others have lived in the area for decades. The common thread with all participants was that none had ever featured a home on the tour before.
This wonderful mix of longtime residents and newcomers gave us all a great chance to get to know one another not just as participants in a wonderful event, but also in the historical context of the neighborhood. Through this introduction, many of us were reminded that homes with wonderful architecture do not alone make a neighborhood. Instead, a true neighborhood consists of merchants, individuals and families that come together in a communal way to create something more than a collection of real property—together they create a place.
As much as I love the event itself, I find the gatherings that are planned around the tour for tour participants to be the best part. Each year the tour includes three events—a pre-tour cocktail party, a breakfast the day of, and an after party. Each event is at the home of a 12 South neighbor and is catered by an area restaurant, and each provides a great opportunity for everyone to become better acquainted.
I cannot encourage each of you enough to consider participating in the 2009 Neighborhood Tour as a homeowner, a committee member or a volunteer for the event. Not only will you be part of a wonderful event, you will get to meet some really great people along the way.

Finally… Another Progressive Dinner!
Our next neighborhood progressive dinner will be Saturday, June 28th at 7pm. It is a great time to visit one another and get to know new neighbors as we eat and then walk from house to house. We currently have volunteers to host the entrée and dessert portions of the evening, so all we need is someone to open their home for an appetizer stop for this traveling band of neighbors. We typically take the first 25 people who RSVP for the evening. There is a suggested donation of $10, which will go to offset the expenses of the evening. If you have any questions or would like to RSVP, please call Todd McEachern at 642-8107 or email todd@mdusi.com. Look for final details in the June newsletter, but don’t wait till then to volunteer or sign up!
