12South Concerts

12South Concerts - Bringing the Community Together

Come enjoy free concerts in the park on four Saturdays this summer/fall: August 23, September 6, September 20, October 4.

Each concert will be held from 5-9PM in the 12 South District neighborhood's Sevier Park, on the corner of 12 South Ave. and Kirkwood Ave.

Each date will feature three acts showcasing the talent of the 12 South neighborhood. Bring your blankets and picnic baskets and join local favorites like Brother Henry, Scott 76, Zig Zag and more!
Frequently Asked Questions:

Where is PARKING?

"We encourage you to walk to the park for your concert experience, but if you need to drive, there are the three lots in the park, street parking, and we can park in the empty lot on the corner of Gale & 12th S."

Can I bring my DOG?

"Of course dogs are allowed at the park on a leash, but we are encouraging folks to leave our furry, four-legged friends at home. If everyone brought their dogs it could get tricky."

News from the Neighborhood
By Tarek El Gammal
An exciting new event, “12 South Concerts,” is kicking off in Sevier Park this month. The concerts will take place from 5-9 p.m. Aug. 23, Sept. 6 and 20, and Oct. 4.
The brains behind this event are Christy Shuff and Whitney Ferré, coowners of Rumour’s Wine Bar. Their idea has spurred the participation of volunteers and musical talent with the shared goal of creating an open, accessible, community event with worldclass, live entertainment.
The full list of volunteers is too long to list here, but members include The Nashville Scene, American Songwriter Magazine and the School of Audio Engineering Institute of Technology—Nashville. We greatly appreciate their enthusiasm and support.
Because this event is all about the music, great care was taken in selecting the various acts that will perform. The list of performers will be made public soon. I’m sure you’ll agree that the music is top notch, not to mention the potential cameos of some big names that have expressed a willingness to participate.
Emma (myemma.com) has committed as one of three corporate sponsors for the event. The organizers are actively seeking additional sponsors and volunteers. Sponsorship dollars will go to the musicians lending their time and talent first and second to the Sevier Park Community Center. Contact Whitney Ferré at creativelyfit@aol.com to volunteer or sponsor the event.
Bring your family, friends, and neighbors. The event is suited for all ages.
Hurry, don’t be late I can hardly wait I said to myself when we’re old. We’ll go dancing in the dark, walking through the park and reminiscing...
[Sorry, I couldn’t resist!]

Neighbors Are What Distinguish 12South
By John Fairhead
I was recently interviewed for a feature in The Tennessean about helping a young couple find their new home. The writer wanted to know why we, and my clients who needed more space, felt so strongly about staying in the 12South area.
Sure, we have a great location close to downtown, work, schools, hospitals, play, etc. The park is right up the street. Our homes have character and charm. We can walk to awesome shops and restaurants, many owned and operated by residents. All of this is great, but other neighborhoods have similar characteristics. In thinking about this, I realized what really makes 12South special is the people.
Communication among us is open and helpful. We look out for each other by reporting and warning about occasional crime, such as recently when a neighbor’s bicycle was reported stolen and then returned unharmed.
We take pride in our neighborhood. Volunteers worked on the 12South sign and median. Neighbors regularly organize and perform cleanup and dumpster days. During meetings with and about the Planning Commission, we have been open, honest, courteous, respectful and creative even though our opinions differ and the stakes seem so high. Best of all, I can wheel my boys down to the park in the wagon and know that there will be other like-minded folks and kids ready to prove this to be true.
My wife and I moved to Clayton Avenue in 2004 and then over to Paris Avenue with our two boys last year. We too wanted more space without dealing with the headache of renovation so we moved just around the corner. We cried when we thought we had to choose between our house and another neighborhood, so we committed ourselves to staying in the neighborhood and waiting for the right place. Our neighbors were wonderful and we hated to leave them, but we knew our future 12South neighbors would be just as nice. For that I am grateful.

Citizen Police Academy Grad Shares Lessons Learned
By Bernadette Welch
As of July 1, 2008, I am now an official graduate of the Citizen Police Academy! This does not give me any special rights to enforce the law—it simply makes me a more informed citizen.
When I wrote my first column on the academy, I mentioned that I have been the “victim” of two attempted break-ins in 12South, most recently in Sept. 2006. Upon arriving home to discover my back window had been broken in, I called 911. Now let me emphasize that if it’s a non-emergency, you should always call 862-8600, but I called 911 because I wasn’t sure if there was someone in my house.
Well... I was put on HOLD! When I visited the official Communications Center during the academy, I asked about this. They said the underlying problem is that, today, essentially everybody owns a cell phone and uses it to call 911 when they see a problem, such as an accident. An average of 30 callers report the same accident, tying up phone lines. Hang ups are also a problem, as the 911 operator must then call you back. The Communications Center suggests only calling about an accident if you are one of the parties involved.
We also learned that there are 13 K-9 Teams in Nashville—working around the clock. The dogs they use are German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois. Their commands are all given in German (never in English). This is for their safety as well as that of citizens and the officers handling them. All dogs live with their handlers and are trained to obey them only. After a shooting several years ago, all K-9 officers now have bulletproof vests.
The Mounted Patrol (all Tennessee Walking Horses, donated to the police department) was created 10 years ago. They are mainly used for crowd control at approximately 600 events a year, and sometimes in search and rescue operations. Currently the unit is made up of five full-time officers plus Sgt. J.D. Harber who oversees the program. This unit not only trains horses for its own use, but also trains and places them with youth camps and with other police departments throughout the U.S.
The Citizen Police Academy will be offered again next spring. More information is available at http://www.police.nashville.gov/citizen/apply.htm.
